Edge Server port requirements

edge

The A/V Edge Service requires the port range from 50,000 through 59,999 to be opened inbound only if you are federating with organizations running previous versions of Office Communications Server 2007.
If you will be federating with companies that run Office Communications Server 2007 and earlier, you must open this port range for both RTP/TCP and RTP/UDP, and for both inbound and outbound connections.
Otherwise, you can close these inbound ports, and leave the port range open only for outbound connections over RTP/TCP.

A publicly routable IP address is no longer needed in a site with only a single Edge Server

And remember about the NON US setting on Edge server

OCS R2: Edge Server installation (non US Language setting)

If you install the Edge server in non US Language setting you can run in to trouble, especially if the Language setting doesn't use “.” (dot) and is using “,” comma instead for delimiter in numbers.

There is a lot of blogs about this, but there is still people running in to this problem, and spending lot of time finding a solution for this.

  • Users would see a ‘limited calling’ error in Communicator
  • Mediation server would complain there was no valid A/V Authentication service
  • front-end A/V Validation would simply fail

This bug has been reported to Microsoft, and is in the process of being fixed. In the meantime, you can work around this issue in the following manner;

  • On the Edge server, add the Edge Service account to local administrators and logoff.
  • Logon using the Edge Service account
  • Go to control panel, Regional and Language options.
  • Change the format to English (US).
  • Remove the Service Account from the local administrators and reboot.

Mobile Communicator R2 some functions will work on R1 server

Some function in MOCO R2 will work even if you only have OCS R1 servers.

One of them is "in a Call" status.

In the video:the left is my Mobile R2 communicator and on the right is the PC Communicator R1 running against a OCS R1 server.

Notes that presence will change to "in a Call" when using the mobile.

Download the Mobile R2 Communicator here and the user guide here

It's NOT SUPPORTED running Mobile Communicator R2 against OCS R1 server and a lot of the new functions won't work before you have a R2 server

Automatic Updates in Office Communicator R2

Automatic Updates in Office Communicator R2
Communicator can be configured to receive automatic updates. Users can configure updates to occur as soon as they become available, or they can schedule them for a specific hour of the day. The Automatic Updates option is available on the Alerts options page.

This is a great feature, and incl. the The Client Version Filter application and the new opptions:

Block with Static URL - Present the user with a message that indicates the user is using a client that is not supported.
Block and Upgrade – Blocks the client from logging on and presents the user with an automatic install to update the client to the correct version. This option is only available for Office Communicator.
Allow and Upgrade – Allows the client to logon on and presents the user with an automatic install to update the client to the correct version. This option is only available for Office Communicator.
